What Is Zi Wei Dou Shu? A Practical Introduction to Purple Star Astrology

2026-08-21 · FateZiwei Research

A thousand-year-old chart system

Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数, 'Purple Star Calculation') is one of the two great chart-based systems of Chinese astrology, alongside BaZi (八字, the Four Pillars). Developed and refined since the Song Dynasty, it maps a set of symbolic stars into twelve 'palaces' — life domains such as self, career, wealth, relationships, and health — based on your exact birth year, month, day, and two-hour time block in the Chinese lunar calendar.

Unlike Western astrology, which tracks the Sun and planets against the zodiac, Zi Wei Dou Shu uses a fixed 4×4 grid of twelve Earthly Branches. Your chart is deterministic: the same birth data always produces the same chart. Interpretation is where tradition, school, and reader differ.

What the chart actually shows

A Zi Wei chart places 14 major stars and dozens of auxiliary stars across 12 palaces. The Ming Palace (命宫, 'self') anchors the reading; the palaces opposite and triangular to it (the 'three harmonies and four cardinalities', 三方四正) modify every judgment. Four special transformations — Lu (禄, gain), Quan (权, power), Ke (科, fame), and Ji (忌, obstruction) — are derived from the Heavenly Stem of your birth and act as the dynamic layer of the chart.

Beyond the natal chart, the system computes 10-year phases (大限) and annual overlays (流年), so the same chart is read again against each stage of life.

What it is not

Zi Wei Dou Shu is a cultural and interpretive tradition, not a science. No controlled study has validated its predictive claims, and reputable practitioners treat it as a framework for reflection rather than a source of certain predictions. Use it the way you would use a thoughtful personality framework — as structured language for thinking about tendencies, timing, and trade-offs — and keep medical, legal, and financial decisions with qualified professionals.
